About Mauritania
Where the Sahara Meets the Atlantic
Mauritania lies at the western end of the Sahara, on the trade routes that carried gold, salt, cloth and books between North Africa and the Sahel. Its towns grew as staging posts for caravans that could number thousands of camels.
The Almoravid movement began here in the eleventh century and went on to shape the history of Morocco and Al-Andalus. Later, Arab and Amazigh lineages merged into the Moorish society that gives the country its distinctive character.
Independence came in 1960, and the capital Nouakchott was built almost from nothing on the Atlantic coast.
اليمن
About Yemen
Arabia Felix and the Incense Road
The Romans called southern Arabia Arabia Felix — fortunate Arabia — because of the wealth it drew from frankincense and myrrh. The kingdoms of Saba, Ma'in, Qataban, Hadhramaut and Himyar controlled the caravan routes that carried these resins north to the Mediterranean.
The Marib Dam, built more than two and a half thousand years ago, irrigated a plain large enough to sustain a civilisation, and its eventual collapse became one of the founding stories of Arabian history.
Islam arrived in Yemen during the Prophet's lifetime, and Yemeni scholars, sailors and migrants went on to shape communities from East Africa to Southeast Asia. Coffee took its European name from the port of Mocha.
العراق
About Iraq
Where History Begins
Mesopotamia — the land between the rivers — is where the first cities were built, the first writing was pressed into clay, and the first written laws were set down. Sumer, Akkad, Babylon and Assyria followed one another across these plains over three thousand years.
With the Islamic conquest and the founding of Baghdad in 762, Iraq became the centre of the Abbasid Caliphate. The city's scholars translated, preserved and extended Greek, Persian and Indian learning, and its libraries shaped mathematics, medicine and astronomy for centuries.
Later came the Mongols, the Ottomans, British administration and the modern republic. Through all of it the rivers, the palm groves and the cities of the south kept their place at the centre of Iraqi life.
جزر القمر
About the Comoros
Islands at the Crossroads of the Indian Ocean
The Comoros lie between Mozambique and Madagascar, on the sea route that carried goods and people between East Africa, Arabia and the Persian Gulf. Settlement drew on Bantu, Austronesian, Arab, Persian and Malagasy origins, and all of them remain visible in the language and the architecture.
From the tenth century the islands were governed by a shifting set of sultanates whose stone palaces, mosques and city walls still stand. Shirazi and Omani links tied them closely to Zanzibar and the wider Swahili coast.
The Comoros joined the Arab League in 1993 and remain its only member entirely composed of islands in the Indian Ocean.
الصومال
About Somalia
Ports of the Indian Ocean
The coast of Somalia has been part of Indian Ocean trade for more than two thousand years. Ancient Egyptian records of the Land of Punt, the incense and myrrh trade, and Greek and Roman accounts of the ports all point to the same shoreline.
From the medieval period the sultanates of Adal, Ajuran and later Geledi and the Majeerteen governed trade in cloth, livestock, frankincense and gold, linking the Horn to Arabia, Persia, India and China.
Somali society is organised around clan and lineage, and its scholars, merchants and sailors carried Islam and Arabic learning across the region from the earliest centuries.
جيبوتي
About Djibouti
A Gateway Between Africa and Arabia
Djibouti sits at the Bab el-Mandeb, the narrow strait where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. Whoever controlled this water controlled the route between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, and the coast has been part of that traffic since antiquity.
The Afar and Somali Issa peoples shaped its inland history, while the port towns of Tadjoura and Zeila carried Islam and trade goods across the Horn of Africa from the earliest Islamic centuries.
The modern state took form around the port and the railway to Ethiopia, and independence came in 1977.
ليبيا
About Libya
Between the Mediterranean and the Sahara
Libya's coast was settled by Phoenicians in the west and Greeks in the east, giving rise to Tripolitania and Cyrenaica — two regions with distinct histories that still shape the country. Rome inherited both and built cities here on an extraordinary scale.
Islamic rule arrived in the seventh century, followed by Ottoman administration and the Karamanli dynasty, Italian colonisation, and independence in 1951.
Across all of it, the Saharan caravan routes carried gold, salt and manuscripts between the Mediterranean and West Africa, and the oasis towns that served them survive in the interior.
فلسطين
About Palestine
A Crossroads of Civilisations
This narrow land between the Jordan Valley and the Mediterranean has been a corridor for armies, traders and pilgrims for as long as there are records. Jericho is among the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world, with walls and a tower raised more than nine thousand years ago.
Canaanite, Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman periods each left their layer on the same hills. Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and Nablus grew as centres of faith, learning and trade.
Palestinian identity today is carried as much by its diaspora as by the towns and villages themselves, and preserving heritage has become a central part of that.
لبنان
About Lebanon
Where the Mountains Meet the Mediterranean
Lebanon's coast was the homeland of the Phoenicians, whose ships carried cedar wood, purple dye and — most consequentially — an alphabet that became the ancestor of most writing systems in use today. Byblos, Tyre and Sidon were among their great ports.
Rome, Byzantium, the Umayyads, Crusaders, Mamluks and Ottomans each ruled here, and the mountains gave shelter to communities who preserved their own traditions through all of it.
Modern Lebanon has known both remarkable cultural energy and long periods of conflict; its people, at home and abroad, remain central to its story.
قطر
About Qatar
A Peninsula Shaped by the Sea
For most of its history Qatar's population lived along the coast, moving between pearling settlements in summer and inland wells and grazing in winter. Rock carvings at Al Jassasiya, cut into the limestone above the shore, record boats and games left by people who worked these waters.
The Al Thani family rose to leadership in the nineteenth century, and the pearl trade sustained the peninsula until the 1930s, when cultured pearls collapsed the market. Oil, and later natural gas, changed everything that followed.
About Algeria
Amazigh, Roman, Ottoman, Algerian
Algeria's history begins with the Amazigh peoples of the mountains and plains, whose kingdoms of Numidia and Mauretania dealt with Carthage and Rome as equals before being absorbed into the empire.
Islam arrived in the seventh century, and the Rustamid, Hammadid, Almoravid, Almohad and Zayyanid dynasties each ruled from cities that still stand. Ottoman Algiers became a Mediterranean power in its own right.
The French colonial period lasted from 1830 until the war of independence ended in 1962, an event that reshaped the politics of the whole region.
سوريا
About Syria
At the Centre of the Ancient World
Syria stands at the junction of Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Mediterranean and Arabia, and almost every civilisation of the ancient world passed through it. Ebla and Mari kept clay archives; Ugarit produced one of the earliest alphabets.
Damascus became the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate in 661, and for a century governed an empire that reached from Spain to the Indus. Its Great Mosque, built on a site sacred for three thousand years, is one of the earliest monumental works of Islamic architecture.
Abbasid, Fatimid, Crusader, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods each added to the cities, and Aleppo remained one of the great commercial centres of the Middle East until the modern era.
السودان
About Sudan
The Kingdoms of Kush and Nubia
Along the Nile in northern Sudan rose the kingdoms of Kerma, Napata and Meroë — the civilisation of Kush, which for a time ruled Egypt itself as its Twenty-fifth Dynasty. Their kings and queens were buried under steep-sided pyramids, and more than two hundred of them still stand.
Christian Nubian kingdoms followed, holding the Nile valley for some seven hundred years, before the gradual spread of Islam and Arabic through trade, migration and the Sufi orders.
The Funj and Darfur sultanates, Ottoman-Egyptian rule, the Mahdist state and Anglo-Egyptian administration all shaped the modern country, which became independent in 1956.
تونس
About Tunisia
From Carthage to the Medina
Carthage was founded on this coast in the ninth century BC and grew into the great maritime power of the western Mediterranean, contesting the sea with Rome for more than a century before its destruction and Roman rebuilding.
The Arab conquest of the seventh century founded Kairouan, which became the first great centre of Islamic learning in North Africa and the base from which Islam spread west to the Atlantic and north into Europe.
Aghlabid, Fatimid, Hafsid and Ottoman rule followed, then the French protectorate and independence in 1956. The medinas of Tunis, Sousse and Sfax still hold the shape of all of it.
