Swahili-Arab Traditions
Weddings, Music and the Written Word
Comorian culture centres on the grand marriage, or anda, a long sequence of ceremonies that confers social standing and can occupy years of preparation. Music, dance and communal feasting run through all of it.
Arabic script has been used to write Comorian for centuries, and Quranic schools, mosques and manuscript traditions remain a central part of village life.
A Nation of Poets
Where Poetry Carries the Law
Somali culture places poetry at the centre of public life. Gabay, buraanbur and heello are not entertainment alone: they argue politics, settle disputes, record genealogy and preserve history, memorised and passed on without writing.
Alongside poetry stand henna, weaving, wood carving and the aromatic trade in frankincense and myrrh that has run through these hills since antiquity.
العراق
Maqam, Poetry and the Table
A Culture of Words and Music
The Iraqi Maqam is one of the most demanding classical vocal traditions in the Arab world, a repertoire of modes and poetry performed by a small ensemble and recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage.
Poetry remains a public art, from the classical qasida to the colloquial verse of the south, and the table — masgouf grilled by the river, dolma, kleicha — carries its own long memory.
Afar and Somali Traditions
Poetry, Salt and the Camel Caravan
Djibouti's culture is built on two great oral traditions, Afar and Somali, in which poetry carries news, law, argument and memory. Both are sustained by pastoral life across a hard landscape.
Caravans still carry salt cut from Lake Assal into the interior, and the coffee, incense and spice trades of the Red Sea remain part of daily life in the markets.
Olive, Thread and Table
Traditions Kept Across Generations
Tatreez, the cross-stitch embroidery of Palestinian dresses, encodes village and family identity in colour and pattern, and is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Each region has its own motifs.
The olive harvest in October gathers whole families into the groves, and the kitchen — musakhan, maqluba, knafeh Nabulsiyeh — remains one of the strongest carriers of memory, at home and abroad.
Sea Songs and the Diwaniya
Traditions That Still Shape Daily Life
The diwaniya, an evening gathering held in a room set aside for guests, remains central to Kuwaiti social and political life. Conversation, poetry and debate move through these rooms every night of the week.
Music keeps the sea alive: the work songs of the pearling crews, the sawt tradition, and the annual voyages of restored dhows all recall the years when Kuwait's wealth came from the water.
Music, Tea and the Nomad Tent
Traditions of a Desert Society
Moorish music is performed by hereditary griot families on the ardin harp and the tidinit lute, holding a repertoire of praise, history and poetry that is learned entirely by ear.
Tea is prepared in three rounds and takes as long as the conversation requires, and the tent, weaving, silverwork and camel husbandry remain part of life across the interior.
Architecture, Coffee and Craft
Traditions Built in Stone and Earth
Yemeni building is a craft tradition in itself: rammed earth in Sana'a, mud brick in Hadhramaut, dressed stone in the highlands, each with its own decorative language of window arches, plaster and coloured glass.
Silverwork, the jambiya dagger, weaving and honey from the Hadhramaut are all part of daily culture, and the coffee that first reached the world through Yemeni ports is still grown on the same terraces.
Craft, Music and the Oasis Town
Traditions of Coast and Desert
Libyan culture draws on Arab, Amazigh, Ottoman and Saharan sources. Silverwork, leather, weaving and pottery remain living crafts, and the courtyard houses of the old medinas show centuries of accumulated skill.
Music ranges from the malouf of the coastal cities to the Tuareg and Amazigh traditions of the interior, and the date harvest still marks the year in the oasis towns.
Table, Music and Diaspora
A Culture That Travels
Lebanese cuisine — mezze, kibbeh, tabbouleh, manakish — is among the most widely known in the world, carried outward by generations of emigrants.
The country's musical and literary influence is equally wide, from Fairuz and the Rahbani brothers to the poets and publishers of Beirut, long a centre of Arabic printing and thought.
Rai, Craft and the Kabyle Village
Many Traditions in One Country
Algerian music runs from the Andalusian classical schools of Tlemcen and Constantine to chaabi in the Algiers Casbah and rai from Oran, which became one of the most widely heard sounds of North Africa.
Amazigh traditions remain strong in Kabylia, the Aurès and the Mzab — in language, in silver and coral jewellery, in pottery and in the layout of the villages themselves.
Craft, Cuisine and Music
Skills Passed Through Generations
Syrian craftsmanship is exceptional in range: damascene inlay of silver and gold into steel, brocade weaving, mosaic woodwork, glass blowing, olive oil soap from Aleppo made to a recipe centuries old.
The kitchen of Aleppo is regarded as one of the great regional cuisines of the Arab world, and the muwashshah and qudud songs of the city hold a repertoire that has been sung for hundreds of years.
السودان
Sufi Song, Craft and the Table
Where Africa and Arabia Meet
Sudanese culture sits at the meeting of Arab and African traditions. The Friday dhikr of the Sufi orders at Omdurman, with drums, chant and movement, is one of its most striking public expressions.
Music, poetry, henna, leatherwork, basketry and the long tradition of Nubian architecture — painted doorways and decorated courtyards — all remain part of everyday life.
تونس
Malouf, Mosaic and the Table
A Culture of Layers
Tunisian malouf, the Andalusian music brought by refugees from Spain, is still performed in the concert halls and zawiyas of the coastal cities.
The country holds one of the world's greatest collections of Roman mosaics at the Bardo Museum, and its craft traditions — Nabeul pottery, Kairouan carpets, Djerba weaving and silverwork — remain in daily production.
