Founded around AD 100 as a colony for Roman veterans, Timgad was laid out on a precise grid — one of the clearest surviving examples of Roman military town planning anywhere.
Its triumphal arch, forum, theatre, library and colonnaded streets remain remarkably legible, preserved by the sand that covered the site for centuries.
Set on the high plains of north-eastern Algeria, Timgad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of North Africa's most complete ancient cities.
